Your Adaptive Yoga Retreat in Italy

We have rescheduled the adaptive yoga retreat, originally foreseen for September 2024, for June next year.

But what is this about? Set in the heart of Salento, Southern Italy, we have designed a journey that combines the serene ambiance of Italy’s sun-kissed coastlines with the inclusive spirit of adaptive yoga, including the occasional Spritz on the beach at sunset.

This yoga retreat is dedicated to individuals with mobility needs and their friends, families, partners, and anyone who wants to discover and practice adaptive yoga. It offers a blend of adventure, discovery of a stunning region, wonderful food, and tranquility. Whether you’re new to wheelchair yoga or seeking to deepen your practice, our retreat caters to all levels of experience, ensuring a personalized and empowering experience.

Where is Salento?

In the Southern region of Apulia, in the heel of the Italian boot, you will find the province of Lecce, also called Salento: a beautiful destination with incredible beaches and landscapes, white stone houses and the local baroque architecture, the “barocco leccese”.

To reach the location of our retreat, you can fly to two airports, Brindisi or Bari, or arrive by train in the station of Lecce. We can organise transfers from all of these locations, or you can drive directly to our selected accommodation, the rural Masseria Limbitello.

A taste of the program

We will start each day with revitalizing yoga and meditation sessions tailored for all abilities, fostering physical and mental well-being. Delight in a selection of carefully chosen activities, including exciting afternoons at fully accessible beaches, cultural excursions to the historic city of Otranto and night out in beatiful baroque Lecce, and mindful relaxation by the hotel’s inviting pool. We will savor local vegetarian and vegan cuisine, and connect with like-minded individuals through shared experiences and a celebratory farewell dinner. Our program balances structured yoga practice with leisure and exploration, promising a memorable and empowering retreat.

Meet Your Yoga Teacher

This Yoga retreat was designed together with Mechthild Kreuser, a certified MBSR teacher and Accessible Yoga Ambassador from Germany, and it stems from a joint passion for organising beautiful activities to give us a taste of what life is about: nature, human connection and adventure. Mechthild holds courses in German and in English, and she is the founder of her own company, Inklusive Achtsamkeit.

Mechtihild’s work puts together her rich background in social psychology, mindfulness, and her personal experience as a wheelchair user to pioneer inclusive mindfulness. Founded on her journey through physical challenges and a passion for inclusivity, Mechthild’s approach to yoga and meditation offers empowering tools for self-awareness and acceptance, making mindfulness accessible to all, regardless of ability. Her work embodies the belief that yoga and meditation are for everyone, fostering a supportive community where each individual is valued and uplifted.

Your Sanctuary: a traditional rural farmhouse

Nestled amidst the picturesque landscapes of Salento, Masseria Limbitello offers an idyllic setting for our yoga retreat. This accessible haven is not just your accommodation; it’s the starting point of a week filled with growth, connection, and relaxation. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted with a heartwarming welcome aperitivo and dinner, setting the tone for a week of unforgettable memories.

“Masseria” is the name for the traditional rural farmhouses that are a predominant view in this region. Today, the Masseria has been renovated and equipped with modern comfort and a beautiful swimming pool, but it has not lost it’s ancient, simple beauty.
As traditionally the main part of everyday life and farm activities took place on the ground floors, this makes these buildings very accessible for wheelchair users – the Masseria has 20 rooms of different sizes, all recently renovated, with different levels of accessibility. Step-free access is available in many rooms, and two rooms are completely barrier-free with adapted bathroom. For the other rooms, we will share details of the options available on a first-come first -served basis – please note that in some cases we can make specific adaptions upon request, so please do ask us!

Beautiful food

In some parts of this charming region, when people talk about food they do not say that it is good, but they use instead “bello” or “brutto”: beautiful or ugly.
We have in store a lot of beautiful food for you and options to make everyone happy. From vegan and vegetarian dishes made with local grown produce, to all allergies and intolerances.

Accessibility features of the Retreat

Accessible Beaches

Thanks to the partnership with the local association “Io Posso” (I can), we will be able to use the all-accessible beaches that this groundbreaking organisation have created in the past 10 years. The team of Io Posso is a fun bunch of volunteers and professionals, and with the support of local police volunteers, will take you in and out of the water in all comfort – and always with a fun joke and a laugh. You really should meet them!

Accessible boat tour

With another local association we will take a tour of the stunning coastline and watch from the sea how natural forces have designed (and keep doing so!) this stunning sea landscape. The boat is also wheelchair accessible and the team of volunteers will get everyone on board!

Transportation, including vans with ramps and lifts, will be tailored for group convenience, ensuring a comfortable, inclusive experience. Transfers to and from the nearby airports and train stations can also be arranged, or if you would like to travel with your own means of transport, you are also welcome to!
The local’s driving style is quite relaxed, so if you wish to rent a vehicle at the airport, for example, you can enjoy the free time in your own terms. Just have to learn to honk every now and then!

Masseria Limbitello, our retreat’s venue, welcomes all, with minor gravel areas that we can adapt to meet participant needs. There are various wheelchair accessible rooms, but not all have an adapted bathroom – and the bathroom set up can be more or less flexible. Since every room is different, we will share with you photos and description of each room, so that you can decide if the accommodation is suited to your needs.

Day and evening trips

You can take part in one or more activities organised in the time that you are not dedicating to yoga and meditation: we have organised some city excursions and beach activities, including adapted water sports. The full program is available upon request.

Medical and Personal Assistance in the location

PAs and medical support can be organised, at a separate fee, upon request. Mention what you would need in the pre-registration form, and we will provide you with options and pricing.

I want to know more! What should I do?

The Retreat will welcome a group of minimum 10 participants and will be held in German and English (depending on the group of participants we can offer lessons in both languages). So fill in the form at the link below and we’ll share with you the full program and price for the options selected.
